Bonifay Middle School began in 1986 as a "school within a school" on the same campus as Holmes County High School. It served 266, 7th and 8th graders. There were 12 full-time instructional personnel and 2 part-time aides. There were also 2 office staff personnel, and 2 custodians. The principal of Bonifay Middle School was Mr. Jerry L. Dixon.
In 1990, Bonifay Middle School became an accredited school. Our philosophy included a belief that each student is unique and with the cooperation between school and home, will become a productive, contributing citizen. This can be done by teaching students how to think--not what to think. This process involves the whole person, both the cognitive and the affective.
In 1991, the Sixth grade moved from Bonifay Elementary School to Bonifay Middle School. To accommodate this expansion, portable rooms were added on as classrooms. Our school population increased by approximately 130 students and 5 new instructional personnel.
The next school year, 1992-1993, Holmes County High School moved to its new location and Bonifay Middle School was no longer a "school within a school." The middle school then took over additional classrooms formerly inhabited by Holmes County High School.
In 1993, Mrs. Peggy Alderman became principal at Bonifay Middle School. At that time, plans were being made for renovation of the middle school in three phases. The first phase included a new media center which has been constructed. The second phase has now begun which includes new offices and classroom repairs. The third phase will include renovation of the gymnasium.
In 1995, Bonifay Middle School went through their 5-year review for accreditation and was successful. The next review took place in the year 2000. Faculty and staff of Bonifay Middle School began this extensive process with the idea of merging our required school improvement plan with the requirements for our Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation. Work on the self-study has been an on-going process that has followed the principles and gudelines outlined by the National Study of School Evaluation. As each committee completed its section, the information was reviewed and integrated into the development of all sections. The result is our commprehensive self-study.
